FANSHAWE 89, MOHAWK 84
LONDON, Ont. - On Wednesday night, the Fanshawe Falcons (8-1) men's basketball team continued their impressive run, this time defeating the Mohawk Mountaineers (7-2) at the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre by a final score of 89-84. The Falcons now sit on top of the OCAA west division and are ranked No. 4 in the CCAA national rankings.
After a pair of three pointers and two quick buckets in the paint, Mohawk jumped ahead 10-0 to start the game. After the slow start by Fanshawe, the offence picked up and the Falcons narrowed the deficit to just two points, 17-15, heading into the second quarter.
The second quarter was close, with big shots from both sides. Moses Orozco-Rayo moved the ball around well and did a great job getting into the paint. After trailing by five late in the quarter, Fanshawe's Trent Payne knocked down the fadeaway jumper, bringing the Falcons within three, 39-36, at the half. Mohawk's Matt Fennell, a London, Ont., native, lead all scorers with 14 points in the first half.
In the second half, Orozco-Rayo continued to show great ball control, making his way into the paint and finding open teammates for the easy baskets. Fanshawe's offence exploded in the third and with three minutes left in the quarter, the Falcons had soared ahead to a 10-point lead. The Falcons couldn't miss a shot and after three quarters seemed to be in complete control up 67-50.
Fanshawe led by as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter (73-53) but Mohawk refused to go down without a fight. The Mountaineers full court press seemed to really bother the Falcons. Over the next eight minutes, Mohawk would continue to close the gap and with just 50 seconds left, Fanshawe's lead had been reduced to just five points. Some clutch free throws and offensive rebounding by Payne helped secure the win for Fanshawe by a final score of 89-84.
On January 18, the Falcons will host the Lambton Lions (5-4) at Budweiser Gardens. The game begins at 12:30 p.m.
