FANSHAWE 93, NIAGARA 82 (2OT)
LONDON, Ont. - The Fanshawe Falcons (9-3) men's basketball team stole a huge win over the Niagara Knights (3-8) in double overtime by a final score 93-82. Kyle McConnell and Chris Stanhope led the way for the Falcons with 18 points apiece, while Connor Therrien chipped in 12.
Niagara came out quickly to start the game, forcing Fanshawe into a number of bad jumpers. Intensity picked up for the Falcons after Moses Orozco-Rayo drew a huge charge near the end of the quarter. The Falcons went into the second trailing 13-7.
In the second quarter, the Falcons rallied behind the offence of Stanhope, scoring a three pointer in the first possession of the quarter followed by a pair of free throws. Therrian knocked down a midrange jumper and Fanshawe took the lead for the first time in the game 17-16. Stanhope led all scorers with 14 points and five rebounds in the half.
Fanshawe went into the second half with a two-point lead 27-25. Ryan Pflanzner nailed a jumper to open the third quarter. The Falcons began to take control of the game and had a comfortable lead before Niagara mounted their own comeback. The Falcons still entered the fourth quarter with a four point lead 46-42.
The Knights pulled ahead in the fourth quarter but the game remained close. Some missed free throws by Niagara gave the Falcons a chance and with just 6.2 seconds remaining in the game, McConnell hit a three pointer from the corner tie the game 66-66. Niagara couldn't score and the game headed to overtime.
The score remained close in overtime, with both teams trading baskets. Down by one point with 13.1 seconds left, McConnell hit a free throw to tie the game at 74. Niagara again could not capitalize on the last possession and the game would go into a double overtime.
In the second overtime, the Falcons dominated the Knights. With solid shooting from the free throw line and smart shots from the perimeter, Fanshawe pushed the lead to 11, eventually winning the game 93-82.
