SHERIDAN 80, ST. CLAIR 73
WINDSOR, Ont. - The St. Clair College men's basketball team gave Canada's top team a scare Sunday afternoon at the SportsPlex attempting to give Sheridan College (Brampton) its only loss of the season.
In the end the Saints settled for an 80-73 loss and finished their regular season with a 7-9 record in the OCAA's West Division which was good enough for the final playoff spot in sixth place. St. Clair will await final games in the league schedule but it will likely travel to Seneca College (North York) on Saturday for its cross-over playoff game with a chance to qualify for the OCAA championship hosted by Centennial College (Scarborough) March 2-4.
Sheridan used a 15-0 run to finish the first quarter up 24-13, but St. Clair responded well in the second trailing 43-36 at halftime. The Saints seemed to hang around with a soundly devised defensive scheme that kept Sheridan on its heels and although the teams played even in the third quarter it seemed the momentum had turned.
St. Clair opened the fourth quarter with a 12-2 run thanks largely to the hot shooting of Alex Seguin (LaSalle/Sandwich) who made three triples in that stretch and allowed his team to take a brief 69-66 lead. However, Sheridan made some key baskets down the stretch and took advantage of the Saints on the glass. St. Clair was out-rebounded 40-26 in the game but kept itself within striking distance shooting nearly 50 per cent from behind the arc (14-30). The Saints were also foul plagued with six players being assessed four for more fouls including one disqualification, but 29 turnovers also led to 32 Sheridan points.
Lance Drummonds (Hamilton) kept the Saints in the game early scoring 10 of his 17 points in the opening half to lead his team on the score sheet and added eight rebounds. Charles Baskin (Detroit, Mich.) scored 16 points in his final home game as a Saint while dishing out four assists. Seguin finished with 15 points all coming by way of the long ball for St. Clair.
Sheridan's Brian Owusu (Mississauga) scored a game-high 19 points in the win.
