BELLEVILLE, Ont. - The Loyalist Lancers successfully defended
its OCAA Division II men’s rugby championship on home turf on
Wednesday, defeating the Georgian Grizzlies 28-12.
First-year player Luke Shillington (Belleville, Ont.) scored a pair
of tries for Loyalist in the victory. Fellow first-year player and
man of the match Bryan Cole (Trenton, Ont.) added a try, a convert
and two penalty goals for a game-high 13 points, while second-year
student-athlete Jesse Gunter (Trenton, Ont.) contributed a try.
League scoring champion Jared Dejong (Lucan, Ont.) and second-year
inside centre Robin Calamatta (Acton, Ont.) scored tries for
Georgian in a losing effort. First-year scrum half Sam Buschbeck
(Markdale, Ont.) added a convert.
Georgian grabbed the initial lead in the match on a try, but
Loyalist responded immediately and never looked back en route to
the title.
Both teams met on the same field in last season’s title game,
with Loyalist winning 29-5.
It was the third meeting of the season between these clubs. The
teams battled to a 19-19 draw at Georgian on Sept. 25, while
Loyalist won at home in the second game 23-10 on Oct. 23.
Loyalist finishes the season undefeated with five wins and two
ties.
