MARKHAM, Ont. - Humber College came away from a muddy
Fletcher’s Fields in Markham, Ont. as the Ontario Colleges
Athletic Association (OCAA) Division I men’s rugby champions
for 2010, upsetting the defending champion and previously
undefeated Mohawk Mountaineers 25-13 on Sunday.
Five different Hawks scored tries in the victory. It was payback of
sorts for Humber, who lost last year’s championship on a
last-second try to Mohawk 16-15.
First-year players Ed Donnelly (Scarborough, Ont.) scored early and
Phil Boone (Brampton, Ont.) added another as Humber took a 10-8
lead at the half.
Mohawk had an advantage early in the second half as Humber lost a
player to the sin bin. But the extra player for Mohawk did nothing
to stop the Humber momentum, as the Hawks scored three more tries
with a man short.
Second-year player Colin Elvis (Brampton, Ont.), first-year centre
Nathan Le (Collingwood, Ont.) and second-year player Jordan Reid
(Ajax, Ont.) all scored for Humber.
The Mountaineers added a late try, but it wasn’t enough for
the silver medalists.
Second-year centre Chris VanSickle (Brantford, Ont.) and first-year
player Eric Moyer (Brantford, Ont.) scored tries for Mohawk.
VanSickle added a penalty kick in a losing effort.
Boone and third-year centre Trevor Atkinson (Stoney Creek, Ont.) of
Mohawk were named “Man of the Match” for their
respective teams.
Humber has won three of the past four OCAA championships. Mohawk
and Humber have taken turns winning OCAA gold medals since
2006.
In the OCAA bronze medal game, Seneca won its second straight
bronze medal with a 13-3 victory over Trent University. It is
Seneca third medal in four seasons.
The lone try of the match was scored by first-year fly-half Tallon
Parekh (Washago, Ont.). Adam Walsh (Richmond Hill, Ont.) booted a
pair of penalty kicks and a convert.
Daniel Santos scored all of Trent’s points on a penalty
kick.
Third-year flanker Matthew Fabbro (Vaughan, Ont.) was named
“Man of the Match” for Seneca.
