FOUR TEAMS IN HUNT FOR OCAA DIVISION II MEN’S RUGBY TITLE
TORONTO - The Loyalist Lancers are in the crosshairs of three teams looking to dethrone the two-time defending Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Division II men’s rugby champions.
TORONTO - The Loyalist Lancers are in the crosshairs of three
teams looking to dethrone the two-time defending Ontario Colleges
Athletic Association (OCAA) Division II men's rugby champions.
Algonquin, Georgian and St. Lawrence-Kingston join Loyalist as the
Final Four vying for a spot in the OCAA gold medal match. Loyalist
hosts Georgian in one semi-final, while St. Lawrence hosts
Algonquin in the other semi.
Both semi-finals take place on Saturday, with the winners
advancing to the gold medal match at the home of the highest seed.
Losing teams will battle for a OCAA bronze medal at the home of the
higher seed. Both matches will take place the weekend of Nov.
12-13.
Georgian (1-3-0, 4th Division II) at Loyalist (4-0-0, 1st
Division II)
Saturday, Nov. 5 - 1 p.m.
Rivals Georgian and Loyalist renew hostilities in a rematch of the
last two Division II gold medal matches, both won by the Lancers.
Loyalist brings an 18-game unbeaten streak into the match.
Loyalist handed Georgian a 32-7 home loss back on Sept. 25 to open
the 2011 regular season. Alec Bauer and
Connor McCann scored two tries each in the
victory. Loyalist outscored the opposition 121-29 in four regular
season matches.
Georgian defeated Fleming-Lindsay 58-39 in a qualifying match.
Perry Coldrick scored a try and made four converts
for a game-high 13 points.
Algonquin (2-2-0, 3rd Division II) at St.
Lawrence-Kingston (3-1-0, 2nd Division II)
Saturday, Nov. 5 - 1 p.m.
Algonquin has impressed in its first season in OCAA men's rugby,
putting together a .500 record. They have a chance to put an
exclamation mark on its season with a win over St. Lawrence.
These teams put together an entertaining match back on Oct. 6,
with St. Lawrence outlasting Algonquin at home 31-27.
Eric Jadowski scored a try in the game's dying
minutes to secure the win for St. Lawrence. Teammate Travis
Smiley was strong with his leg, with three penalty kicks
and one convert. Phil Assad scored a pair of tries
for Algonquin in a losing effort.
St. Lawrence's only loss of the season came against Loyalist.
Algonquin has lost two straight games.
