TORONTO - The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA)
Division I men's rugby season comes to an exciting conclusion this
Saturday on two fronts.
The Seneca Sting are one win away from the perfect season, with
only the defending OCAA champion Humber Hawks standing in their
way. One of these cross-town rivals will be golden as the sun sets
on Saturday night.
In Peterborough, Trent is on the hunt for its first-ever OCAA
medal in any sport. The Excalibur host Mohawk in the OCAA bronze
medal match.
Humber (4-1-0, 2nd Division I) at Seneca (5-0-0, 1st
Division I)
OCAA Gold Medal Match
Saturday, Nov. 12 - 2 p.m.
Seneca once dominated OCAA men's rugby, winning an unprecedented
five straight provincial titles from 2001 to 2005. Although it has
won OCAA bronze medals in consecutive seasons, Seneca has every
intention to end its gold drought at home on Saturday.
Humber has put together a dynasty of its own, winning three of the
last four OCAA championships. Its only loss of the season came
against Seneca in a 29-15 outcome on Oct. 13. Jesse
Lofthouse scored two tries for Seneca in the win. OCAA
Division I scoring champion Phil Boone earned five
points with a penalty kick and convert.
Seneca manhandled Mohawk 69-19 in last week's semi-final. Humber
defeated Trent 17-9 in the other semi-final.
Despite the perfect record, Seneca should be very weary of Humber.
It was Humber who ended Mohawk's bid for a perfect season in last
year's gold medal match.
Mohawk (2-3-0, 4th Division I) at Trent (3-2-0, 3rd
Division I)
OCAA Bronze Medal Match
Saturday, Nov. 12 - 1 p.m.
This is Trent's third consecutive visit to the OCAA bronze medal
match, but up to this point has not had anything to show for it.
The Excalibur are hoping the third time is the charm.
Mohawk has won a medal of every colour the past three seasons,
including silver last year. Mohawk has not been as strong in 2011
as in year's past, needing a 35-33 win over Fleming-Peterborough in
a qualifying match just to advance to the OCAA semi-finals.
Trent defeated Mohawk 21-17 on Oct. 16 in the only regular season
meeting between these clubs. Mike Knowles scored a
pair of tries for Trent in the victory. Mohawk's Joel
Clarke was successful on two converts and a penalty
kick.
Trent has not won a medal in any sport since joining the OCAA in
2002.
