The Mohawk College Athletics Department is pleased to announce
the appointment of Bill Stuart as the new head
coach of the men's varsity rugby team.
Stuart, a resident of Grimsby, Ont., has an extensive background as
a player and coach in the sport. He has coached at the high school
level for 28 years in Halton, mainly with E.C. Drury in Milton and
Nelson in Burlington. While with Nelson, Bill and his players made
two tours to New Zealand. The last two years he coached the junior
teams at Beamsville High School.
Stuart has also been an assistant coach with the Brock University
men's squad where he mainly took care of the backs and ran the
second and third teams. While at Brock his teams won the OUA gold
medal in 2007 and the bronze in 2009. He also has coached the
Grimsby men's team and has, for the last four years, guided the
flag rugby team for youngsters.
Bill played from 1970-1990 with the Hamilton Hornets and is a Life
Member of the team, which won the Ontario Rugby Union (ORU)
Championship in 1977. He was with the Niagara Rugby Union Regional
Team (Thunder) from 1978-1983 and with the Ontario Team (Blues) in
1978 and 1979.
"I am excited to be coaching Mohawk and am looking forward to
getting started," said Stuart, who is not unfamiliar with the
programme, as his son Mike is a former player for the
Mountaineers.
