MARKHAM, Ont. - The disappointment from an Ontario Colleges
Athletic Association (OCAA) semifinal loss didn't last long for the
Seneca Sting as they scored early and often to defeat the Algonquin
Thunder 39-10. With the win, the Sting won the OCAA men's rugby
bronze medal on Saturday afternoon at Markham Campus Field.
Seneca came out on the offensive early as the Sting received the
opening kick and stormed down the field. Seneca's Morgan
Walls (Brantford) capped off the impressive start with a
try less than a minute into the match. Jesse
Lofthouse (Stouffville) converted the kick for an early
7-0 lead.
With the Thunder trying to regain their composure from the quick
start, Seneca struck moments later. OCAA all-star Chad
Bain (Belleville) took a pass and charged towards the
scoring area, eventually driving across the line. The convert
failed as Seneca held an early 12-0 lead.
Algonquin regrouped and began to impose their will, pushing the
Sting backwards. A pair of tries by Brian Hue
(Ottawa) and Eric Wilson brought the Thunder
within two, but two failed converts would leave the Thunder
trailing by two, 12-10. It was the closest Algonquin would get.
Seneca, with a chance to end their season on a winning note, took
control of the match for the final 60 minutes on both sides of the
ball.
Bain added two more tries in the match along with another from
Walls. Michael Perkins (Newmarket) and
Mike Feurstein (Toronto) each added a try along
with a convert from Boris Zivkovic (Toronto) to
complete the scoring for the home team. The Sting successfully
closed out their season in the final match to be held at Markham
Campus Field.
Seneca's Walls and Alongquin's Hue were named Man of the Match for
their respective teams. With the win, Seneca adds to its OCAA
record 13 medals in men's rugby.
