PERFECT HUMBER THREE-PEATS IN OCAA MEN'S RUGBY
PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - The Humber Hawks completed a three-peat in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) men's rugby, winning a third straight provincial championship following a 39-22 victory over the host Trent Excalibur on Sunday.
PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - The Humber Hawks completed a three-peat in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) men's rugby, winning a third straight provincial championship following a 39-22 victory over the host Trent Excalibur on Sunday.
OCAA men's rugby player of the year Phil Boone (Brampton) scored a pair of tries and contributed two converts for a match-high 14 points in the victory. Humber's Joseph Ginsberg (Toronto) also contributed two tries, while teammates Jack Smith (Peterborough), Ed Donnelly (Toronto) and Etienne Roberts (Brampton) scored a try each.
Humber completed a perfect season on the men's rugby circuit with an overall record of 8-0-0. This Hawks team will be remembered for its record-breaking regular season, establishing new OCAA records scoring 663 points, 107 tries and 64 converts in six matches. Boone set new regular season individual records with 48 converts and 166 total points. Humber surpassed the 100-point barrier in all six matches, allowing just 10 points the entire season.
It was East region opponents that were the most competitive against Humber, with the Hawks defeating Seneca 41-7 in the OCAA semifinals, followed by their 17-point victory over the Excalibur.
Trent also had a perfect record entering the OCAA gold medal match, and ends the year with a record of 7-0-1. Kevin Lee (Ajax), Graham Abbott (Peterborough), Warren Snowdon (Peterborough) and Trevor Roberts (Peterborough) all scored tries for the Excalibur in a losing effort. Abbott added a convert for a team-high seven points.
Despite the loss, 2012 marks the best season for Trent in OCAA men's rugby to date, earning its first silver medal.
