HUMBER 104, SHERIDAN 0
REXDALE, Ont. - With the foundation for their program only
having recently been poured, the Sheridan Bruins men's rugby team
(0-1 OCAA) got a first-hand look at what is required to occupy the
penthouse, ending up on the wrong end of a lopsided scoreboard
against the two-time defending OCAA champions from Humber in their
league debut.
"This is not unexpected, Humber is a great team," head coach
Carlos Moniz said. "We fielded probably at least four maybe five
guys today, who had never played a game of rugby in a league
before. Their eyes got real big and today was really a baptism by
fire. We can't go to week two without going through week one. We
can't go to week three without going through week one and two. We
were definitely over-matched, it was a big eye-opener and on Monday
we'll get back at it again and we'll try to work on the stuff that
we need to improve."
Moniz understands that in the process of building the program,
there will be hardship like this loss and that ultimately it will
only be a footnote to what the program has become.
It also didn't hurt that he was given some kind words by someone
wearing the opposition's colours.
"We had something really cool happen," he said. "A guy wearing a
Humber shirt, while we were talking to our leaders at the end
there, he came up and he said 'I started this program here at
Humber, way back when. I just want to tell you that, you guys are
starting a program as well, you have to start at square one and
it's going to improve. We were there one day and now you guys are
here; stick with it and it will come.' So I thought that was kinda
cool, I didn't know the guy, he didn't have to come up and say
that, but it was really nice for him to come up and give us a
little bit of insight like that. So the truth is that this is where
we're starting and in a few years, we'll look back on this year
with some fondness and the understanding that you have to start
somewhere."
The Bruins have a bit of a short turnaround, as they prepare for
their second road game in six days when they travel to Georgian on
September 19.
