OSHAWA, Ont. - Shuhab Sultani's goal in extra time gave the Mohawk men's soccer team a 3-2 victory over the Durham Lords in Oshawa, Ont., on Saturday.
It also gave them a berth in the OCAA championship where they will face Humber in the quarter-finals on Thursday at Redeemer University College.
Mohawk and Durham were goalless in the first half, but the Mountaineers broke the deadlock early in the second half on a penalty kick by Ephraim Cirillo. But Mohawk head coach Richard Bennett said his team had a mental breakdown for about 10 minutes and it allowed the Lords to score twice and take a 2-1 lead.
"We kept pushing for the tying goal," said Bennett. "And it did not come until the third minute of stoppage time, when Semir Ibrahimi made a great pass to Andre Lewin, who had a one time touch on the ball to tie the game at the end of regulation time."
About seven minutes into the first of two, 15 minute extra time periods, Sultani received a pass, took a touch just outside the 18-yard box and fired a shot into the far corner of the net for the go-ahead goal.
"We held them off until the final whistle and I'm proud of the lot," said Bennett.
