FANSHAWE 0, ST. CLAIR 0
WINDSOR, Ont. - The St. Clair College men's varsity soccer team wrapped up their OCAA regular season schedule on Wednesday evening by hosting the Fanshawe Falcons at the Main Campus Field.
In a very exciting intense game between two talented and fast teams the match ended in a 0-0 draw. St. Clair controlled more of the play in the first half with eight shot attempts compared to four for the Falcons. Fanshawe keeper Mohammed Nabavich had to make three saves while Shane Beaton had to make one for the Saints in the half. Fanshawe put some more pressure on in the second half with seven shot attempts while the Saints had six. Both goalies made three saves in the second half to keep the sheet clean. Each keeper had to make a couple tough saves late in the match to keep in scoreless.
With the draw, the Saints record on the season ended up at 7-1-2 and tied for first place in the OCAA West Division with Fanshawe who had an identical record. Both teams tied each other twice during the regular season as well. However, St. Clair had a better overall goal differential so claimed first place based on that tiebreaker. Both teams scored 24 goals in 10 games while the Saints only allowed seven compared to nine for the Falcons. St. Clair is currently ranked third in Ontario and 10th in Canada. Fanshawe is ranked fourth in Ontario and 12th in Canada.
With the first place finish St. Clair has earned a bye into the OCAA provincial championship. The Saints will play in their quarter-final match on Thursday, Oct. 27 at 12 noon. Their opponent will be determined this weekend in another playoff match. The championship is being hosted by Redeemer University College in Ancaster, Ont., from Oct 27-29.
