HENRY HEADLINES OCAA MEN’S VOLLEYBALL AWARDS
MARKHAM, Ont. - The top men’s volleyball players in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) were honoured Thursday morning in Markham, Ont. in advance of the 2011 OCAA men’s volleyball championship hosted by Seneca College.
MARKHAM, Ont. - The top men’s volleyball players in the
Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) were honoured Thursday
morning in Markham, Ont. in advance of the 2011 OCAA men’s
volleyball championship hosted by Seneca College.
Andrew Henry (Brampton, Ont.) of the Sheridan Bruins is the OCAA
player of the year. Henry led Sheridan to a 15-3 regular season
record in 2010-11 averaging 3.69 offensive points, 2.72 kills and
0.87 blocks per game. The fifth-year middle is also a Canadian
Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) all-Canadian, as well as an
OCAA West Division first-team all-star.
Henry’s head coach, Dave McAllister, is a nominee for CCAA
coach of the year. The OCAA West Division coach of the year led
Sheridan to its first playoff appearance since 1994. The Bruins won
13 straight games to end the regular season, clinching a bye into
the OCAA championship in the process.
Justin Scapinello (London, Ont.) of the Mohawk Mountaineers is the
OCAA rookie of the year. The OCAA West scoring champion led all
active players in the region averaging 4.02 points and 3.35 kills
per game. The right side player is also the OCAA West rookie of the
year as well as a West first-team all-star.
OCAA East scoring champion P.J. Cornelius (London, Ont.) of the
Durham Lords is a CCAA all-Canadian and an East first-team
all-star. Cornelius led all active OCAA players averaging 4.77
points per game.
Josh Lappala (Kingston, Ont.) of the Loyalist Lancers is the OCAA
East rookie of the year. The left side player averaged 2.37 points
per game, was second on Loyalist with 130 kills while contributing
21 service aces.
Andrew Hinchey of the Durham Lords is the OCAA East coach of the
year. The East Division champion Lords earned a record of 16-2 this
past season and flirted with a perfect record, beginning the season
with 13 straight victories.
Joining Henry and Scapinello as OCAA West first-team all-stars are
Fanshawe’s trio of Jordan Westman (London, Ont.), Andrew
Thorpe (Ingersoll, Ont.) and Jordan McTavish (Chatham, Ont.);
Nipissing’s Scott Coulthard (Wingham, Ont.); and Matthew
Isaacs (Pickering, Ont.) of the OCAA West champion Humber
Hawks.
OCAA West second-team all-stars include Paul Kemboi (Brampton,
Ont.), Derek Quinn (Mississauga, Ont.) and Steven Cheung (Toronto)
of Humber; Cody Williams (Milton, Ont.) of Sheridan; Hogan Smith
(North Bay, Ont.) of Canadore; Frankie Edgecombe (Elmvale, Ont.) of
Nipissing; and Christian Vandergeest (Kitchener, Ont.) of
Redeemer.
Joining Cornelius as OCAA East first-team all-stars are Durham
teammates Dave McMann (Elmvale, Ont.) and Jeff Silver (Whitby,
Ont.); Kyle Donnan (Pickering, Ont.) and Greg Gillespie (Elmvale,
Ont.) of Loyalist; and Jason Hernandez (Harron, Ont.) and Kyle
McCann (Scarborough, Ont.) of Seneca.
The OCAA East second-team all-stars are made up of Boreal trio
Alexandre Piquette (Sturgeon Falls, Ont.), Eric Robert (Sudbury,
Ont.) and Robert Gignac (Penetage, Ont.); Algonquin duo Alexandre
Corsi Caya (Ottawa) and Josh Harris (Kitchener, Ont.); Peter
Christian (Chatham, Ont.) of Seneca; and Loyalist’s Matt
Woods (Pickering, Ont.).
