NIPISSING 3, HUMBER 1
NORTH BAY, Ont. - It was only the first meeting between the Lakers and Hawks however for the returning players this victory must feel good and perhaps erase some of the bitter memories of last year loss to Humber in the OCAA championship final.
This, however, is a new year and a new Lakers squad and today they showed why they are considered the top team in the OCAA as they sailed to a 3-1 (25-20, 25-20, 21-25, 25-12) victory over the defending national champions and top ranked team in country.
The Lakers balanced scoring had five players in double digits as Tom Podstawka, Adam Leblanc and Scott Coulthard each had fourteen points to lead the offence. Fourth year middle player Frankie Edgecombe had 13 points will Andre Leblanc rounded out the offence with 10 points.
Second year setter Jordan Boucher once again distributed the ball well to his hitters creating numerous one on one combinations and was named the Boston Pizza player of the game for the Lakers.
"We were able to capitalize on a few uncharacteristic mistakes by Humber and ran with the momentum," said Nipissing head coach Eric Yung. "Although it was a big step for us today, we must improve on all aspects of the game, especially on the service line. The guys will have a couple of days off before preparing for a much improved St. Clair and the always consistent Redeemer."
The Lakers will be back in action this weekend as they host Redeemer Saturday and St. Clair Sunday with games beginning at 2 p.m.
