SENECA 3, FLEMING 1
Welcome to the Matt McGirr Show.
That appeared to be the theme in The Hive tonight as the Seneca Sting improved their record to 6-1 on the season with a four-set victory over the Fleming Knights.
The second year left side hitter compiled an impressive 18 kills to easily lead both sides.
McGirr's Sting, fresh off of their third consecutive set following their only loss of the season, looked poised for a sweep of the Knights after taking the first two sets.
In the first set, Seneca came out swinging with McGirr and Predrag Gajic leading the way. After taking a 5-4 lead early, the Sting never trailed again in the set as they took the opener 25-20.
The second set saw the Sting impose their will at the net with Jordan Darlington getting into the action, scoring both kills and blocks aided by his freakish vertical leap. The Sting jumped out to a huge lead and never looked back as they coasted to a 25-16 win.
In the third set, the Sting jumped out to an 8-2 lead before a timeout by the Knights seemed to halt the momentum. A number of passing errors and excellent serving by Brandon Perry helped Fleming capture a 9-8 lead. The teams battled back and forth for the remainder of the set before the Knights pulled away for the 25-21 victory.
Refocused, Seneca rolled the Knights in the fourth set 25-16 to close out the match.
Seneca received contributions offensively from Gajic and Darlington with 11 and 10 kills respectively to go with McGirr's 18. Nick Coleman also added seven while Gajic had six aces. Second year libero Gabe Harrietha had 10 digs.
Perry was the top hitter for Fleming with 13 kills while Clay Couchman added seven. Perry also added five aces while Cory Campbell had four blocks. Alec Dupuis-Girard was the leader on the back end with seven digs.
The Seneca Sting (6-1) will host the Trent Excalibur (2-4) Saturday at 3 p.m. while the Fleming Knights (3-4) will travel to play Georgian (3-2) Saturday at 3 p.m.
