NIPISSING 3, CANADORE 2
NORTH BAY, Ont. - The Nipissing Lakers men's volleyball team edged their cross campus rivals the Canadore Panthers 3-2 (25-21, 16-25, 25-9, 20-25, 15-10) in the first installment of the Battle of the Bay.
With the win the Lakers improve to 5-1 on the season while Canadore is still searching for its first win of the season (0-6).
The Lakers were clearly the more offensive team as they collected 75 offensive point during the match compared to 33 for their opponents. The team however struggled with execution and committed an uncharacteristic number of unforced errors that prevented any type of flow to the match.
Leading the offence was Frankie Edgecombe with 15 points collected on 10 kills, two aces and three blocks while Mike Ballagh added 14 points.
Edgecombe was named the Boston Pizza Player of the Game.
"I take full responsibility for not preparing our team for this match," said a clearly frustrated head coach Eric Yung. "My expectations were clearly to high for some players. We need to improve as a group and that includes the coaching staff. We need to turn it around quickly as one of the top teams is coming into town."
The Lakers will need to re-focus quickly as the Mohawk Mountaineers (4-1) will be looking to steal a road victory from the Lakers Saturday beginning at 2 p.m.
