Few would say that the men's volleyball team at Seneca College has a "home court advantage", but their record says otherwise. The Sting easily rode to another home victory with a three-set sweep over the Trent Excalibur.
With the win, Seneca improves to 4-0 at home this season with a sets win-loss ratio of 12-2.
Seneca won a tightly contested first set 25-22 in front of a larger-than-normal crowd on Open House Day at Seneca College. Seneca led early before a feisty Excalibur team battled back to lead 21-19. Seneca responded by scoring six of the next seven points for the set victory.
The final two sets mirrored each other as Seneca led throughout without seriously being challenge. The Sting closed out the final two sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-19.
Fans were treated to a show at the net by Seneca's "Big Three" in Predrag Gajic, Matt McGirr and Jordan Darlington. Gajic, averaging three kills per set coming into the match led the team with 13 on the afternoon. High-jumping Darlington had 11 kills out of the middle, including an unblocked kill to end the first set which drew a reaction from the crowd. McGirr, who was coming off an 18 kill performance on Wednesday night, had 10 kills along with two blocks. McGirr also led the team with eight digs.
Brad Keizerwaard was the team leader in kills for Trent with seven with teammate Chris Jackin finishing off six rallies via a kill. The Excalibur had a team approach to defense with four players tied at five digs each. Sam Ahier, Jackin, Alec Beatty and Alex Campagnolo all kept five rallies alive defensively.
The Seneca Sting (7-1) will travel to play the Loyalist Lancers (2-3) Wednesday at 8 p.m. while the Trent Excalibur (2-5) will travel to play Georgian (3-2) tomorrow at 2 p.m.
