HAMILTON, Ont. - Unfortunately, there had to be a loser. The Mohawk Mountaineers and the Humber Hawks played a classic OCAA men's volleyball match at the Fennell Gymnasium, Friday (Nov. 30) with the visitors from Etobicoke pulling out a five set thriller.
Humber won the first game 25-20, lost the second 25-21, won the third 25-19 and lost the fourth 25-20. That set up the decisive fifth game and with the score 10-5 Humber, it looked like the Hawks would simply soar to victory.
But the Mountaineers had different ideas and stormed back valiantly to tie the score at 14-14. However, a Mohawk service error, then another point by Humber gave them a 16-14 decision and the match.
Mo Sulaiman led the Mountaineers with 11 kills and two stuff blocks. Trevor McLaughlin had 15 kills and one block, while Marcin Jedrzejewski fashioned nine kills, two service aces and one block.
Matthew Isaacs had 16 kills, one ace and three blocks for Humber. Both teams are now 5-3 in the West Region. Mohawk has a two game losing streak.
