GEORGE BROWN 3, SENECA 2
In one of the most exciting matches of the season, the Seneca Sting fell to the George Brown Huskies in five sets at Newnham Gym, dropping the fifth set 15-10.
The loss is the second in three matches for the Sting who were once 13-1 and atop the OCAA's East Division.
Playing without their top offensive threat in Predrag Gajic, Seneca struggled in the first two sets. George Brown won the battles at the net as Seneca looked overmatched by their opponents. George Brown took the first two sets 25-21 and 25-14.
The Huskies appeared poised to make quick work of the Sting on their home court as they led 16-7 in the third set. A rally by Seneca had them down 17-14 as the once quiet crowd began to make some noise. The team in red continued to play hard and they were rewarded as Jordan Darlington began to use his vertical to create match-up problems for the Huskies. Seneca would go on to win the third set 25-23, but still trailed in the match 2-1.
With the crowd fully behind them, Seneca came out and dominated the fourth set. The Sting led for the entire set until a late George Brown rally closed the gap to 23-18. Seneca would regain their composure and close out the set 25-19 and force a fifth and deciding set.
Seneca, having overcome a two set deficit, appeared to have all of the momentum on their side as they took an early 2-0 lead on the Huskies. The comeback was not to be as George Brown stormed back to take a 6-3 lead and switched sides with an 8-4 advantage. Seneca had few answers for the Huskies attack as they won the fifth set 15-10 and took a very important match in the standings.
Vladyslav Danyliuk finished with a team-high 15 kills. Darlington had 11 kills and four blocks. Matt McGirr and Will Oyetakin each added eight kills with Oyetakin also adding three blocks. Gabriel Harrietha had 11 digs after starting as a libero and moving to the left side.
Edwin Sheon had a match-high 19 kills to go along with two aces. Stephen Duong also had 11 kills and an ace. Adam parsons had six kills and six blocks while Sean Bennett also contributed three blocks. Richard Serote had seven digs defensively while Sheon added six of his own.
The Seneca Sting (14-3) will travel to play Algonquin (12-3) on Friday, February 8 at 8 p.m. while the George Brown Huskies (13-4) will play at Georgian (9-7) on Friday at 8 p.m.
