ST. CLAIR 3, NIPISSING 2
The St. Clair men's volleyball team had a great weekend winning both of their matches on home court.
On Saturday, St. Clair took on the top-ranked Nipissing Lakers from North Bay and came away with an exciting 3-2 win. The Saints got off to a great starting winning the first two sets 25-23 and 25-14. A strong Nipissing team did not give up and came back to win game three 26-24 and game four 25-17. St. Clair came our hard in the fifth and deciding set winning by a score of 15-11.
Connor West (Lethbridge, Alta.) was the top point getter with 15 kills, one ace, two stuff blocks and 10 digs. Travis Wigle (Kingsville) also had a big game with seven kills, two service aces, three stuff blocks and six digs. Setter Josh Lynch was solid as well distributing the ball well and also picking up five kills, two service aces, three stuff blocks and nine digs. Nipissing are ranked third in Ontario and eighth in Canada.
On Sunday, the Saints defeated the Canadore Panthers by a score of 3-0. Game scores for St. Clair were 25-17, 25-16, and 25-21. It was a solid team effort for St. Clair as head coach Rob Lynch used his entire 13 player roster throughout the match.
The top offensive player for the Saints was Tom Charbonneau (Waldheim, Sask.) with three kills, one ace, three stuff blocks and seven digs.
The men are now 6-11 on the season with one game remaining in the semester. After winning only one match last season the Saints have improved significantly but unfortunately are just going to miss the playoffs in the very tough OCAA West Division. Of the 13 players currently on the roster, 12 are expected back next year.
The team's final home game is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 10 against the Sheridan Bruins at 3 p.m.
