NIAGARA 3, FANSHAWE 0
The Fanshawe Falcons men's volleyball team played host to the Niagara Knights on Monday night. The Falcons played tough against the third-ranked team in Canada but fell short in three straight sets (29-27, 25-19, 25-14).
Fanshawe overcame 21-14 and 24-19 deficits in the first set to tie it at 24. With the match tied at 27, Niagara was able to put it away and take the first set.
Early set struggles continued for Fanshawe in the second as they fell behind 6-2. Niagara pulled away and took a commanding two-set lead.
Fanshawe played well early in the third before giving up four straight points to make the score 11-7 for Niagara. Once again the Knights had too much fire power down the stretch and won the match. The loss gives Fanshawe a record of 8-9 with one match to go.
Aaron L'ecuyer led the Falcons with 11 points (11 kills). Sam Youlton and Shayne Petrusma each had 13 for the Knights.
The match was Falcon head coach Josh Westgate's last home game, as he will be stepping down at the end of this season.
"It's been kind of surreal; I don't think it has really hit me yet," said Westgate. "I got a little emotional on Saturday night after that big win. I've been a part of this volleyball program for 11 years as a player, an assistant coach and a head coach and I will always be a part of this program."
The Falcons play their final regular season game this Wednesday night in Hamilton.
