LONDON, Ont. - On Saturday afternoon, the No. 2 CCAA nationally-ranked Fanshawe men's volleyball team (13-2) continued their impressive run, defeating the No. 9-ranked Mohawk Mountaineers (11-4) in three straight sets 25-19, 30-28, 25-19.
Early in the first set, the Falcons and Mountaineers offences took over. With the score 10-8 for Fanshawe, the teams had combined for 14 kills and an ace. With the score 13-9 for Fanshawe, Mohawk made a pair of hitting errors and found themselves down by six and needing a timeout. Mohawk closed the gap to three, 20-17, before Fanshawe's Sebastian Lethbridge caught the Mohawk defence sleeping and scored on a first contact volley to the back corner of the court. With the Falcons leading 24-19, David AuCoin had a monster block and the Falcons took the first set. James Jackson led the Falcons with five kills.
In the second, the teams started the set out close again. Fanshawe's Derek Braun had a pair of kills in the middle to give the Falcons the early 6-4 lead. Mohawk battled back and took a lead of two, 10-8 before Fanshawe's offence took over once again. The Falcons went on a 5-1 run behind a couple of big kills by Nate Van Camp and took the lead 13-11. The teams went point for point until back-to-back hitting errors by the Falcons tied the game at 19. After a timeout, Lethbridge and Braun put up a big block for Fanshawe and the Falcons retook the lead. The game couldn't get any closer and with the score tied at 26, Braun put up yet another block to give the Falcons the lead again. With Fanshawe leading 29-28, Mohawk hit the ball of the net and out of bounds and the Falcons took the send set 30-28. Braun had seven points in the set for the Falcons.
Andre Foreman started the third set with an ace for the Falcons but Mohawk came right back and took the 3-1 lead. After tying up the game 3-3, Fanshawe's David Gundrum made a ridiculous dig that led to a kill for Jackson, putting the Falcons back on top. Emotions started to heat up as both teams knew how important this match was. With the score 12-10 for Fanshawe, Jackson and Braun denied the Mohawk attack once again, putting up one of the biggest blocks in the OCAA. The Falcons pushed the lead to six, 16-10 forcing Mohawk to take its final timeout of the set. Fanshawe didn't let up, scoring another two points before the Mountaineers finally got the ball back to serve. The Falcons finished the game on a 14-9 run and a kill by Jackson end the set. Fanshawe won the third set by a final score of 25-19.
Fanshawe returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 3, when they host the No. 15-ranked Redeemer Royals (10-4) at 8 p.m. The Falcons won their last meeting on the road against the Royals 3-1.

LONDON, Ont. - The Fanshawe Falcons made it six wins in a row, winning three straight from Mohawk, 25-19, 30-28, 25-19, in OCAA men's volleyball in London, Ont., on Saturday.
James Jackson and Derek Braun each had 11 kills for the Falcons.
Eric Girard led the Mountaineers with 13 kills. Trevor McLaughlin had 10 kills and one service ace and Andrew Dube also had 10 kills, plus two stuff blocks.
"We battled hard but a lack of crucial game plan execution led to separation," said Mohawk head coach Matthew Schnarr. "Minimizing our errors will need to be a key moving forward."
Fanshawe is now 13-2 and Mohawk is 11-4.
