TORONTO - Teyven Blackmore (Beechville, N.S.) of Humber Polytechnic is the 2024-25 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Men's Volleyball Player of the Year.
The fourth-year outside hitter was the West Division Scoring Champion averaging 4.3 points per set on 187 kills, 32 service aces and six blocks in 16 matches. Blackmore's 0.62 service aces per set average led all OCAA players. While a beast offensively, Blackmore also gets into the back court and puts on a defensive clinic digging and passing for the West Division champion Hawks. Also named a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) All-Canadian, Blackmore headlines the West Division First-Team All-Stars.
Yaroslav Svidritskiy (Vaughan) of George Brown College is the East Division Player of the Year. The second-year left side was the OCAA and East Division Scoring Champion leading the league with 277 kills, 4.20 kills per set, 334 points, and 5.1 points per set in 18 matches. Transitioning from a middle blocker to an outside hitter, Svidritskiy embraced this challenging adjustment with remarkable success. Also named a CCAA All-Canadian, Svidritskiy headlines the East Division First-Team All-Stars.
Humber's Josh Nicholson (Markham) is the West Division Player of the Year. The fifth-year setter averaged 7.98 assists per set totalling 367 in 15 matches. Nicholson's accuracy and setting ability is only matched by an astute defensive prowess. Also named a CCAA All-Canadian, Nicholson is also a West Division First-Team All-Star.
Sam George (Sudbury) of Cambrian College is the OCAA Rookie of the Year. George led all OCAA setters with 552 assists and an average of 8.76 per set. Stepping into the role of a rookie setter is no easy task, but George has handled it with confidence and skill, filling those big shoes with ease. The West Division Rookie of the Year is also a West Division Second-Team All-Star and headlines the West Division All-Rookie Team.
The East Division Rookie of the Year is Trent Engel (Ajax) of Durham College. The middle blocker was the OCAA hitting percentage leader at .540, making contact for 114 kills on 191 total attempts in 18 matches. Also named an East Division Second-Team All-Star, Engel headlines the East Division All-Rookie Team.
Cambrian's Dale Beausoleil is the OCAA Coach of the Year. The Cambrian Shield had a successful regular season, finishing in second place in the West Division with a 14-4 record, including a 10-match winning streak to end the season. The West Division Coach of the Year is also the nominee for CCAA Coach of the Year.
Reid Saxby of Georgian College is the East Division Coach of the Year. Saxby led the Georgian Grizzlies to the East Division championship with a record of 17-1, including an 11-match winning streak to end the season.
