SUDBURY, Ont. - The Humber Hawks won their fifth consecutive gold medal in the finale of the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Men's Volleyball Championship in Sudbury, Ont., on Sunday.
The Hawks defeated the host Cambrian Shield 3-1 (31-29, 20-25, 25-18, 25-13) to claim their 11th OCAA title, tying the Sheridan Bruins for the most all-time.
Although their season ended in defeat, the Shield had their best finish to an OCAA season since 1995 when they also won a silver medal. Cambrian is still looking for its elusive first OCAA championship.
In the bronze medal game, the Fanshawe Falcons defeated the St. Clair Saints 3-1 (26-24, 23-25, 25-13, 25-16).
Humber, Cambrian and Fanshawe have all finished on the OCAA podium in each of the last three championships, with the Shield and Falcons switching positions this year.
The Hawks moves on to the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Volleyball National Championship in Niverville, Man., from Mar. 5-8. Humber is the reigning silver medalists at the competition.
