SENECA FINISHES EIGHTH AT CCAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL NATIONALS

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. - The Seneca Sting fell to the Lethbridge Kodiaks in Game 11 of the BMO 2012 CCAA Women's Basketball National Championship in a 69-47 loss in each team's final game of their seasons.

The teams' rankings entering the tournament were accurate in comparison of the final results, with the Kodiaks seeded in seventh and the Sting in eighth. 

Top scorers for the game were Mackenzie Meeks from the Kodiaks and Sihen Berhe from the Sting. Players of the game went to Zoe Layne of the Sting and Mackenzie Meeks of the Kodiaks. 

"I thought our defence was really strong from start to finish and that was a key for us," said head coach for the Lethbridge College Kodiaks Avery Harrison. "We played everybody, we went deep. Nine out of 10 players scored, so it was a really good team effort. I'm very happy with it." 

The first quarter got off to quick start with a total of four team fouls within the first three minutes. The Kodiaks saw better luck at the basket, leading 11 – 5 just five minutes into the match. 

The Sting struggled to keep stride with the Kodiaks and their fast-break method of play, which resulted in a first quarter score of 21–11 for Lethbridge. 

In the second quarter, Seneca played tighter defence and were more dominant at the boards in both ends, causing the Kodiaks to play rushed and make some shooting errors. Despite the Sting's ability to generate some offence, the Kodiaks hung onto their lead ending the second quarter 35–25. 

The third quarter opened with some sloppy offensive play on both sides, creating more fumbles and fouls than baskets. However, the Kodiaks pushed hard defensively and pressured in the front-court, generating an even greater lead. The score was 52-30 for the Lethbridge College Kodiaks going into the forth.

A series of scored layups from the Kodiaks opened the final quarter and prompted the Sting to put on their full-court press, which lead to a combined total of nine team fouls for the quarter. Despite a solid effort from the Sting on both sides of the court, they were unable to close the gap.
