SHERIDAN 72, MOHAWK 60 (FINAL)
BRAMPTON, Ont. - Having only played three games in a seven week span since their last OCAA West contest, it may have taken the Sheridan Bruins women's basketball team (14-8, 8-2 OCAA) a while to get back into their groove - particularly at the offensive end - but once they did, they were able to break the game open in the second half of a 72-60 win over Mohawk.
"It didn't always look the prettiest out there, but we got the job done," co-interim head coach Veneshia Morrison said. "We still have some room to grow and I like that we have not hit our peak yet, but we need to start working our way toward that."
The game started out with a feeling out process from both teams as six of the games 11 lead changes occurred in the first quarter.
Mohawk led 19-16 after the opening frame and weathered an 11-0 second quarter run from the Lady Bruins that saw them briefly lose the lead, only to restore it, 38-35, at the half.
Sheridan took the lead with a quick 6-0 run to start the third quarter and after Mohawk answered with a 4-0 run to re-claim it, the double-blue answered in kind with a 15-2 run that gave them a double-digit edge that they would not relinquish.
They were ahead 57-45 going into the final quarter and did not allow Mohawk to get any closer than that mark.
Nakia Arthur and Michelle Asare each scored a team-high 16 points, while Michelle Abella (11) and Desiree Tindugan (13) were also in double figures.
The team travels to current division leaders Fanshawe on January 25 and Morrison says there are some things the team can do to improve going into that contest and beyond.
"We need to tighten up on defence and on the glass a little bit," she said. "If we do the things we're supposed to do rebounding-wise and at the defensive end of the floor, it takes a lot of pressure off of us offensively."
Blue notes: After winning the sibling scoring battle 19-16 in the first meeting, Michelle Abella was out-scored by her sister Rachelle 24-11.
