ALGOMA 63, SHERIDAN 51 (FINAL)
BRAMPTON, Ont. - Offensively speaking the final two games of the season for the Sheridan Bruins women's basketball team (17-11, 11-5 OCAA) could not have been more different.
In a 63-51 loss to Algoma, the Lady Bruins converted less than 20 per cent of their field goals and hit only two of 33 attempts from three-point range.
Conversely, in a 96-50 win over Sault they hit 14 triples, three away from equalling the OCAA single-game record.
"Like any other basketball team we are far tougher when we're knocking down shots," interim head coach Veneshia Morrison said. "The problem for us recently has been that we are settling far too often for jump shots rather than creating them through the flow of our offensive play."
Against Algoma the Lady Bruins got off to a good start, leading 9-2 early and 15-8 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter though, Algoma slowly started to chip away at the lead and on the strength of a 12-0 run out-scored the home side 22-9 in the second quarter on their way to a 30-24 halftime advantage.
Sheridan opened the second half with their second three-pointer to cut the margin to three, but it was as close as they would get as Algoma out-scored the double-blue 33-25 in the second half to pull away.
Nakia Arthur had a team-high 23 points, while Michelle Asare also hit double-figures with 12.
The process of rebounding against Sault was not necessarily a swift one though as the visitors led for much of the first quarter until an 11-2 Sheridan run - nine of which came via three-pointer - created a 22-18 lead for the Lady Bruins at the end of one.
They were then able to slowly start building on that lead - making it 48-39 at the half - before a big third quarter blew the contest open.
All of the Sheridan scoring came in two runs - 14-0 and 15-0 - as they won the quarter 29-5.
Desiree Tindugan scored a game-high 25 points - which included seven three-pointers, one off the the school record and two off the OCAA record - while Michelle Asare (19), Shaylanda Saunders (16) and Michelle Abella (14) were in double figures.
Prior to the game four players - Arthur, Asare, Abella and Kiannah Kerr - were recognized for their contributions to the program during senior day festivities.
The Lady Bruins close out their OCAA West schedule with a trip to southwestern Ontario where they will play St. Clair (February 17) and Lambton (February 18).
