SENECA 69, SHERIDAN 47 (FINAL)
TORONTO – The Seneca Sting took advantage of playing on home court in their first game at the 2012 adidas/VSP Sports Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Women's Basketball Championship tonight. The Sting soundly defeated the Sheridan Bruins, 69-47, producing a strong effort on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. First-Team All-Star and East Region Defensive Player of the Year Samantha Evans, of Toronto, led all scorers with 15 points, and also contributed on the glass with nine rebounds and five assists.
Seneca led Sheridan by as many as 26 points in the game though things were much closer at the halfway mark. The Sting's lead was only 10 at the break heading to their dressing room with 28-18 half-time advantage. Paige Smith, of Consecon, Ont., earlier in the day named to the OCAA All-Rookie Team, was hot from three-point-range draining a troika of three-pointers for Seneca before the half was out and finished with 12 points on the day, notching all of Seneca's three point field goals for the game.
Despite balanced scoring from the trio of OCAA Scoring Champion, Nakia Arthur (Brampton), 14 points; OCAA First-Team All-Star, Michelle Asare (Brampton), 12 points; and guard Desiree Tindugan (Mississauga), 13 points; the Bruins had their struggles on defence. Seneca shot a sizzling 47 percent in the second half, while the Bruins had 14 turnovers over that stretch. Sheridan finished the game shooting 25.4 percent from the field.
Tindugan was named adidas/VSP Sports Player of the Game for the Bruins while Evans earned the honour for the Sting. Seneca advances to the second semi-final game tomorrow at 8 p.m.
