TORONTO - After a morning where regular season accomplishments were celebrated, the battle for the 2012 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Women's Basketball Championship got underway at Seneca College in Toronto on Thursday afternoon. The George Brown Huskies kicked-off the tournament with a 58-52 quarter-final victory over the Algoma Thunderbirds. The opening tilt was an upset win for George Brown as the 11-5, third-seeded Huskies topped the 15-3, second-seeded Thunderbirds.
The Huskies were led by Toronto's Aria Charles and Kristina Lane who each chipped-in with 14 points as Charles notched the double-double adding 11 boards and earning adidas/VSP Sports Player of the Game honours for her squad. Earlier in the day, Charles was named an OCAA First-Team All-Star and those credentials were reaffirmed with this afternoon's performance.
A hard-fought affair throughout, the Thunderbirds trailed by only one point at half-time down 31-30. Led by the 15 points and six assists of Sault Ste. Marie's Corina Bruni, also named an OCAA First-Team All-Star and Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) All-Canadian earlier today, the Thunderbirds kept the action close until late in the fourth quarter as the Huskies began pulling away. Bruni was also named Player of the Game for the Thunderbirds.
