TORONTO – The Algonquin Thunder survived an early scare and avoided becoming the second team upset on Day 1 of the 2012 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Women's Basketball Championship hosted by Seneca College in Toronto.
The No. 1-ranked Thunder (15-1) defeated the No. 4-ranked Humber Hawks (13-5), 58-46 on Thursday afternoon, though the final score did not reflect how close a game this quarter-final match truly was. With three players recording double-digit point performances, the balanced attack of the Thunder proved too tough for the Hawks to tame.
Algonquin's Sandre Bascoe of Ottawa, earlier in the day named OCAA Player of the Year, First-Team All-Star and Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) All-Canadian, notched a game-high 18 points and 15 rebounds, delivering an effort that could not be matched by the Hawks' defence. Bascoe's efforts earned her adidas/VSP Sports Player of the Game honours.
Thunder teammates Abeer Farhat, of Ottawa, named to the OCAA's All-Rookie Team, contributed 11 points, while fellow Ottawa-native Trish Grey chipped-in 11 points.
The story of the game was Humber's early momentum which saw them nearly escape the first half with a lead. However, the inconsistency of the Hawks defence benefited the Thunder as Humber faced a five-point deficit at the half, trailing 25-20. The Hawks were led by Hamilton, Ont.'s Maria Suriani, who recorded 15 points on 5-for-12 shooting and OCAA Rookie of the Year, Atissa Cronk, of Kingston, Ont., who scored 10 points and grabbed nine boards. Suriani was named Player of the Game for the Hawks.
