ALGONQUIN 61, GEORGE BROWN 39 (FINAL)
TORONTO – Who says thunder doesn't strike twice? The Algonquin Thunder have qualified for the 2012 adidas/VSP Sports Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Women's Basketball Championship gold medal game, making it to the final for the second straight season. The Thunder defeated the George Brown Huskies 61-39 in their semi-final match-up tonight at Seneca College's Newnham Gymnasium.
Algonquin will now face the winner of the next game between the Seneca Sting and Fanshawe Falcons in the gold medal final scheduled for tomorrow at 6 p.m. Algonquin is the reigning OCAA women's basketball champion having defeated the Sheridan Bruins at the 2011 tournament.
The Thunder used a dominant first-half to solidify the game's result, shooting better than 46 percent from the field compared to the Huskies 27 percent accuracy rating, heading to the break with a 32-19 lead. Algonquin was also superbly aggressive, attacking the basket and making it to the charity stripe a total of 27 times in the game while George Brown managed just seven trips to the foul line.
The game's high scorer was OCAA Player of the Year and CCAA All-Canadian Sandre Bascoe, of Ottawa, who recorded 15 points and nine boards on 6-for-12 shooting. The Thunder also received strong performances from OCAA All-Star and All-Rookie Team guard Abeer Farhat, another Ottawa native, who chipped-in 11 points, five steals and three rebounds. Farhat was named adidas/VSP Sports Player of the Game for Algonquin.
George Brown's shooting struggles did not do justice to the success they had achieved this season in the OCAA finishing with an 11-5 record and the No. 3 seed in the East Region. However, there were several bright spots for the Huskies including Toronto's Aindrea Barrett, who scored nine points and eight rebounds in claiming OCAA Championship Player of the Game honours for George Brown. Meanwhile fellow Torontonian, Kristina Lane, recorded six points, three boards and three steals for the Huskies.
