ST. LAWRENCE (K) 79, GEORGE BROWN 56
KINGSTON, Ont. - The 4-2 Vikings women's basketball team faced the 4-3 George Brown Huskies on Friday. Both teams started the game tied in the OCAA East Division for fourth place (along with Loyalist College), each team with eight points. A win for the Vikings would push them to tie Seneca College for second place, a loss could result in the team dropping to sixth. Also on the line was the Vikings home-unbeaten streak at three games.
Both teams played a tight first quarter, exchanging points throughout the first 10 minutes resulting in a 13-12 score. It looked as if the teams were going to play tight defence the entire game, but St. Lawrence pulled away in the second quarter while shutting down the high-powered George Brown offence. The Vikings would only allow seven points against, while scoring an incredible 30 points in the second quarter alone. This outburst of scoring resulted in 24-point lead at the half (43-19).
George Brown would respond in the third quarter going on an eight-point run. But St. Lawrence would respond, maintaining their strong lead over George Brown. Foul trouble would play a factor in the third quarter; with both teams reaching five fouls each half way through the quarter. Still having a 20-point lead in the fourth quarter, St. Lawrence College stuck to their game plan, expanding their lead even further to an amazing 30 points. The Vikings would continue to put on an impressive offensive display in the fourth to go on and win 79-56.
From the stats sheet, Vikings guard Lacey Knox continues to have an impressive season as she led the team with 27 points and seven rebounds. Jessica Cetoute dominated the glass with 12 points and 16 defensive rebounds (21 total). The difference maker in this game was the second quarter scoring by the Vikings, and George Brown shooting 28 percent.
The Vikings don't have much time to enjoy the win, as they are back in action Saturday afternoon at home, against Cambrian College at 1 p.m.
