SENECA 52, DURHAM 49
OSHAWA, Ont. - The Durham College women's basketball team dropped a close contest to the Seneca Sting 52-49 at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre Tuesday night.
The Lords led their OCAA East region rivals 17-12 after the first quarter, and increased the gap by as many as eight points in the first half. The momentum in the game quickly turned as Durham saw their advantage wash away after some poor shooting and found themselves behind a point at the half.
Trailing 44-34 heading into the final quarter, the Lords rallied down the stretch to bring the game within a point at 40-29. However, the Sting made two free throws and grabbed some key rebounds to eke out the win.
The Lords (2-5) were led by athlete of the week Kelsey Hare (Whitby, Ont.) who finished with 26 points and nine rebounds in a losing effort. Hare was on fire in the fourth quarter with 12 points.
Ashley Nurse and Paige Smith led the Sting (5-2) with 13 points, nine rebounds and 12 points, six rebounds respectively.
Durham is two points out of a playoff position, trailing George Brown (3-3) and Centennial (3-4) in the standings. The Lords will travel to Peterborough on Friday night to take on the Fleming Knights (4-4).
Tuesday was also the final home game for Durham on the 2012 portion of their schedule. The Lords would like to thank everyone for contributing to the toy drive for the SickKids foundation.
