ETOBICOKE, Ont. – In the final match of the day at the belairdirect OCAA Women's Basketball Championship, the George Brown Huskies (10-8, fourth in East) took on the Fanshawe Falcons (16-2, first in West) for the final spot in the semi-finals tomorrow.

George Brown looked solid at the start of the game, scoring six fast break points to lead 7-2 early. A Melissa Vilar jump shot at the top of the key made it 9-4 for the Huskies with five minutes to go in the quarter. The Falcons responded with a couple of quick baskets to make it 9-8, but a couple of Aria Charles free throws with three minutes to go would bump the Huskies back up 11-8. Fanshawe would not go away, however, with a 6-0 run that was capped by a Janine DeLeon lay-up at the buzzer that would put the Falcons up 14-11 at the end of the first quarter.

Fanshawe would start to hit an offensive groove in the second quarter and open up a 20-13 lead with seven minutes to go. Kayla Higgins had a chance to put the Huskies within two, but would miss a wide open lay-up and hear it from the crowd. This resulted in the ball going the other way with Stephanie Antwi making the lay-up making it 23-17 for the Falcons. Fanshawe outscored the Huskies 17-8 for the rest of the quarter, and hold a 40-25 lead going into the half.

Angel Mibkay led all score for the Huskies with seven points and three rebounds.

Felicia Mazerolle led the Falcons with 14 points, four rebounds, and one assist at the half.

Fanshawe then put the game out of reach in the second half with a superb shooting performance from behind the arc coupled with a stubborn defence that forced 11 second-half George Brown turnovers. The Falcons won this game by a final of 67-52.

Player of the Game honours for Fanshawe went to Mazerolle with 21 points, five rebounds and two assists.

Player of the Game honours for George Brown went to Charles with nine points, eight rebounds and one assist.

"Our execution will definitely be key moving forward this tournament," said Mazerolle. "Our defence needs to get a bit better too seeing as we were in foul trouble all night. But considering we hadn't played a game in 10 days it feels good to gut out a win moving forward."

With the win, Fanshawe will now face Humber in the second semifinal match-up tomorrow at 8 p.m. George Brown will now take on the St. Lawrence Vikings in the second match of the bronze medal quarter-finals.
