FANSHAWE 67, REDEEMER 46
LONDON, Ont. - On Friday night, the Fanshawe women's basketball team (10-4) defeated the Redeemer Royals (6-10) by a final score of 67-46. Fanshawe currently sits tied for third in the OCAA West Division.
Fanshawe's defence caused a number of turnovers for Redeemer, not allowing the Royals to even attempt a shot for the first three minutes of the game. Despite the fact that the Falcons held Redeemer to just 11 shots attempted all quarter, the Royals found themselves with a 13-10 lead after the first quarter.
Both teams turned up the offence in the second quarter and after a 6-0 run by the Falcons with two minutes to play in the half, Fanshawe retook the lead. Redeemer came back with a three pointer by Lindsay Moffatt but another 6-0 run by Fanshawe pushed their lead to four at the half, 30-26.
Fanshawe extended their lead in the third to as many as 10, but a 7-0 run by the Royals cut the game to three with two minutes left in the quarter. Fanshawe's Ali Vlasman scored six straight and the Falcons led by nine with one quarter left to play.
The Falcons kept the pressure on and deep two-point basket by Fanshawe's Linda Huynh with two minutes left in the game pushed the lead to over 20. Fanshawe won the battle of the boards 49-24 and went on to win the game by a final score of 67-46.
Fanshawe heads on the road Saturday, Feb. 8 to take on the Sault Cougars (1-11). The game starts at 6 p.m.
