NIAGARA 60, FANSHAWE 56
LONDON, Ont. - On Saturday night, the Fanshawe Falcons (9-4) women's basketball team came up short to the Niagara Knights (6-6), losing by a final score of 60-56. Laura Vere led the way for the Falcons with 13 points and eight rebounds. The Falcons are in third place in the OCAA west division standings.
Through the first quarter of play, the teams were very evenly matched. Both teams defences were fantastic with neither team leading by more than four points in the quarter. The game was tied 10-10 after the first. In the second, Niagara pulled ahead and took at 29-20 lead into the half. Kaitlyn McPherson led the way for the Knights with 10 points while Fanshawe's Stephanie Antwi carried her team on the boards with six rebounds in the first half.
After five solid minutes of play in the second half, Fanshawe took the lead, outscoring the visiting Knights 12-2 to take the lead 32-31. Fanshawe's Laura Vere hit a key three point basket, while Larissa McBean added two points from the line but Niagara quickly recovered with a number of great shots from the outside. Fanshawe found themselves trailing 48-41 entering the fourth.
In the fourth quarter, the Falcons worked to close in on the seven-point deficit. With under two minutes to play, the Falcons brought the score to within just three points. However, down the stretch, the Knights took control and went on to win by a final score of 60-56.
Next Saturday, Jan. 31, the Falcons host the Sault Cougars (1-11). The game begins at 6 p.m. at the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre.
