FANSHAWE 53, SENECA 41
LONDON, Ont. - In their final home game of the season, the Fanshawe Falcons defeated the Seneca Sting in a cross-over playoff game by a final score of 53-41. The Falcons will now head to the OCAA provincial championship from March 5-7 at Centennial College.
The Falcons started the game with a breakaway steal by Stephanie Antwi to give Fanshawe a quick lead. Great defence by the Falcons forced the Sting into a number of early turnovers. The Falcons didn't allow the Sting to score for over six minutes in the first quarter and led 11-4 heading into the second.
After a made free throw at the start of the second quarter by Seneca, the Falcons once again played phenomenal defence, holding the Sting to just three made field goals in the entire quarter. Fanshawe led by double digits, 25-15, at the half. Ali Vlasman led the Falcons with eight points on 4-of-6 shooting.
Fanshawe's defence continued where it left off in the first half, forcing the Sting into a shot clock violation in the first possession of the third. Six straight points by Fanshawe's Rachel Jaworowicz pushed the Falcons lead to 15, 39-24, with four minutes remaining in the quarter. Seneca would go on a run to finish the third, but Fanshawe would still lead 42-31 with one quarter to play.
Halfway through the fourth quarter, Seneca had closed the gap to just six. Antwi scored a quick five points to push the Falcons lead back to double digits. In the end, Fanshawe's defence was too much for the Sting, as the Falcons went on to win by a final score of 53-41.
With the win, the Falcons will head to the OCAA provincial championship March 5-7 at Centennial College where they will face the St. Lawrence Vikings in the quarter finals.
