ALGONQUIN 67, SENECA 36
TORONTO - Nov. 5, 2011 seems like so long ago, but it was the last time that the Algonquin Thunder was defeated by an OCAA school.
The school on that evening opposing the Thunder was the Seneca Sting.
Since that time, the Thunder have won 59 consecutive games against OCAA competition, including Friday night's 67-36 win, spoiling the Sting's home opener.
The Sting held their own against the four-time defending champs early, trailing the Thunder by an 8-5 margin midway through the opening quarter. The Thunder quickly eliminated any thoughts of an upset, opening a 15-8 lead after the first frame before expanding their lead to 17 at the half, 32-15.
The third quarter saw both teams score game-highs in points, but the 19-12 margin only widened the gap as the Sting were unable to stop the Thunder's balanced attack.
In the end, the 31-point loss overshadowed a 15-point performance by Seneca's Rochelle Hassan (Vaughan). Nikea Worrell scored eight for the Sting while adding a game-high nine rebounds, including five off the offensive glass. Sarah Givens contributed seven points, three assists and three steals in more than 34 minutes of action.
Felicia Mazerolle led the Thunder with 21 points and three steals. Samantha Highgate added 12 points in 11:30 of court time while Jesa Rada scored seven points and added eight rebounds.
The Sting travel to Loyalist on Nov. 7 for an afternoon matinee while the Thunder get back in action tomorrow against the George Brown Huskies.
