MOHAWK 71, ST. CLAIR 64
WINDSOR, Ont. - The St. Clair College women's basketball team dropped a pivotal game against Mohawk Friday night at the SportsPlex by a score of 71-64 leaving the Saints with little chance of a home playoff game.
The Saints were slow out of the gate and trailing 19-11 after the opening quarter but responded well in the second quarter to lead 38-31 by halftime. But an injury to St. Clair guard Shannon Kennedy early in the third quarter left it shorthanded down the stretch and were outscored 40-26 in the second half.
St. Clair cut the deficit to just three points with a few minutes to play but could not get any closer. St. Clair were statistical winners in many categories but were outscored 22-2 in points off the bench and turned the ball over 27 times giving Mohawk 16 more shot opportunities.
Fifth-year guard Jaide Lyons (Windsor, Ont./FJ Brennan) led St. Clair with 19 points adding four rebounds and a remarkable eight assists. Third-year St. Clair point guard Sarah Bondy (Amherstburg, Ont./General Amherst) continued her fine shooting knocking down four triples in the opening half to score 14 of her 16 points by the break. But foul trouble hampered her second half and slowed down the offence for St. Clair.
Nicole Tamm (Windsor, Ont./Holy Names) also reached double figures scoring 12 points and cleared 14 rebounds for the double-double not to mention four blocked shots.
Mohawk's Stef Hrymak (Hamilton, Ont.) scored a game-high 20 points leading her team in the win.
