HUMBER'S WATT HEADLINES OCAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL AWARDS
TORONTO - Kia Watt (Toronto) of Humber Polytechnic is the 2024-25 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Women's Basketball Player of the Year.
The fifth-year shooting guard was the only player during the regular season to be in the OCAA Top 5 in both points (307) and rebounds (143). The West Division Scoring Champion averaged 19.2 points per game and moved into third place in all-time OCAA scoring with 1,207 points. Also named a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) All-Canadian and West Division Player of the Year, Watt headlines the West Division First-Team All-Stars.
Dasia McDonald (Nepean) of Algonquin College is the East Division Player of the Year. The fourth-year guard led the Wolves to an unblemished 14-0 record for the third straight season en route to an East Division championship three-peat. While fourth in league scoring averaging 16.4 points per game, McDonald is also the East Division Defensive Player of the Year leading the OCAA with 65 steals. The Wolves earned East Division Best Defensive Team honours allowing just 38.6 points against per game. Also named a CCAA All-Canadian, McDonald headlines the East Division First-Team All-Stars.
Rounding out the CCAA All-Canadians is Janee Harrison (St. Catharines) of Niagara College. The fourth-year forward has been an offensive and defensive anchor for the Knights all season, leading Niagara to a West Division championship. Harrison averaged a team-high 14.8 points per game and was fifth in the OCAA with 44 steals and eight with 135 rebounds, helping Niagara secure West Division Best Defensive Team honours. Harrison is also a member of the West Division First-Team All-Stars.
Sydney Shawyer (Horseshoe Valley) of Georgian College is the OCAA Rookie of the Year. Shawyer was a key role player on one of the top teams in the East Division. Shawyer led all OCAA rookies averaging 12.7 points per game, 35 total three points made and a 39.3 three-point shooting percentage. The East Division Rookie of the Year headlines the East Division All-Rookie Team.
Ashlyn Anderson (Latchford) of Fanshawe College is the West Division Rookie of the Year. The forward led all OCAA players with 40 blocks and was second in the league with 186 rebounds. Anderson was among the team leaders averaging 10.3 points per game. A West Division Second-Team All-Star, Anderson headlines the West Division All-Rookie Team.
Mihai Raducanu of Mohawk College is the OCAA Coach of the Year. For the second consecutive year, Raducanu has coached the Mountaineers to a 10-plus win season and a top four finish in the West Division. The West Division Coach of the Year is also the nominee for CCAA Coach of the Year.
Caleb Hugh of Loyalist College is the East Division Coach of the Year. The Lancers work tirelessly at improvement and their efforts are shown in being first in the OCAA in forced turnovers and among the leaders in team steals. Both statistics are a direct result of hard work and effort.
Ella Doull (Toronto) of St. Lawrence College is the OCAA Scoring Champion. The third-year guard averaged 22.4 points per game, the only student-athlete to eclipse 20. Doull's 313 total points in 14 games also led the league. The East Division Scoring Champion is also an East Division First-Team All-Star.
Humber's Sarah Baptie (Mississauga) is the West Division Defensive Player of the Year. The fourth-year guard's ability to defend any player regardless of position has been crucial in shutting down opposing offences for the Hawks. Baptie is also a West Division Second-Team All-Star.
Georgian's Daija Thompson (Whitby) is the East Division Sixth Woman of the Year. The fourth-year guard averaged 9.5 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game, averaging 19.8 minutes in 13 games, all but one from the bench.
Fanshawe's Layla Mackenzie (Camlachie) is the West Division Sixth Woman of the Year. In addition to being an offensive threat averaging a team-high 10.6 points per game, Mackenzie is the first to get on the floor for a loose ball and is very valuable to the Falcons defensively.
In addition to Watt and Harrison, West Division First-Team All-Stars include Breanna Pretty (Sarnia) of Lambton College; and Angong Jacob (Calgary, Alta.) and Kendra Oliver (Ajax) of Mohawk. Joining McDonald and Doull as East Division First-Team All-Stars are Cianah Miller (Mississauga) of Algonquin; Ami May (Raymond, Alta.) of Georgian; and Grace Callahan (Corbyville) of Loyalist.
