OTTAWA - The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) is down to its final four in women's basketball, with all remaining teams headed to Algonquin College in the nation's capital for the OCAA Women's Basketball Championship.
OTTAWA - The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) is down to its final four in women's basketball, with all remaining teams headed to Algonquin College in the nation's capital for the OCAA Women's Basketball Championship.
The undefeated East Division champion Algonquin Wolves will host three teams from the West Division, all surviving two OCAA elimination rounds to make it to Ottawa. Joining the Wolves are the second seed Humber Hawks, third seed Mohawk Mountaineers and fifth seed Fanshawe Falcons.
The OCAA semi-finals take place on Friday, leading into Saturday's medal matches. The OCAA champion moves on to the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Women's Basketball National Championship in Fredericton, N.B., from Mar. 12-15.
Fanshawe (8-8, 5th West) vs. Mohawk (11-5, 3rd West)
Friday, Feb. 28 - 5 p.m.
The Cinderella story of this year's playoffs have been the Fanshawe Falcons. After finishing fifth in the West Division with a .500 record, the Falcons have won consecutive road playoff games, including a 56-53 upset over the West Division champion Niagara Knights last Saturday to earn a ticket to Ottawa.
OCAA West Division Rookie of the Year Ashlyn Anderson (Latchford) recorded an impressive double-double against the Knights with a team-high 19 points and 15 rebounds. Fanshawe second-year guard Joanna Smith (Simcoe) added 15 points from the bench.
The Mohawk Mountaineers also took care of business on the road, defeating the Georgian Grizzlies 65-51 in Saturday's quarter-final to extend their season by at least two games. Third-year guard Angong Jacob (Calgary, Alta.) scored a game-high 19 points, while fourth-year guard Maddie Anderson (Whitby) contributed 14 points, a season-best 15 rebounds and four steals for the Mountaineers.
The Falcons and Mountaineers split their regular season series with a home win each. Mohawk narrowly won 74-73 in October, while the Falcons won 68-63 in overtime earlier this month. Fanshawe last won the OCAA championship in 2020, while Mohawk has not won gold since 1991.
Humber (14-2, 2nd West) vs. Algonquin (14-0, 1st East)
Friday, Feb. 28 - 7:30 p.m.
Friday's marquee matchup, at least for the home town crowd, features one team looking to finish their story, while the other looking to create another plot twist.
The Algonquin Wolves had an undefeated season going in 2023, only to settle for an OCAA bronze medal. The Wolves were undefeated entering the 2024 OCAA gold medal game, only to be thwarted by the Lambton Lions. Now in 2025, Algonquin is undefeated having won 16 straight games, but this time the Wolves will be playing for a championship on their own court.
The Wolves feature All-Canadian fourth-year guard Dasia McDonald (Nepean). While fourth in league scoring during the regular season averaging 16.4 points per game, McDonald also led the OCAA with 65 steals. Algonquin's last OCAA championship came in 2014.
For the Humber Hawks, they are one season removed from winning back-to-back OCAA championships and are more than capable of being a thorn in the side of the Wolves. Tied for the top record in the West Division, Humber has won six straight.
The Hawks feature another All-Canadian in fifth-year shooting guard Kia Watt (Toronto). Watt was the only player during the regular season to be in the OCAA Top 5 in both points (307) and rebounds (143).
