The Fanshawe Falcons captured their 14th conference championship Sunday – the most in league history – with a 72-61 victory over the Humber Hawks.
In the bronze medal game, the Mohawk Mountaineers defeated the Loyalist Lancers 106-64. It marks the eighth time in OCAA history Fanshawe, Humber and Mohawk have shared the women's basketball podium.
Fanshawe and Humber were tied 21-21 after the opening quarter. Offences cooled in the second as the Falcons took a 32-28 lead into halftime after holding Humber to seven points in the frame. The Hawks shot 15.4 per cent from the field in the quarter.
The game remained close through much of the second half before a 9-2 run by Fanshawe gave the Falcons their largest lead of the game at 16 points with 1:37 remaining, securing the championship.
Fanshawe shot 50 per cent from the field, outrebounded Humber 38-29 and scored 44 points in the paint.
Ashlyn Anderson of Fanshawe and Eremwon Destiny of Humber were named Championship Players of the Game. Anderson recorded 18 points and 15 rebounds, while Destiny finished with 16 points and five rebounds.
In the bronze medal game, Mohawk opened the scoring with an 18-0 run and led 32-11 after the first quarter. The Mountaineers extended their advantage to 34 points by halftime.
The second half was more even, but Mohawk pushed its lead to a game-high 51 points with 3:37 remaining.
The Mountaineers shot 50 per cent from the field, knocked down 13 three-pointers and outrebounded the Lancers 42-28.
Grace Callahan was named Loyalist's Player of the Game with 20 points, six rebounds and five steals. Maddie Anderson earned the honour for Mohawk with 22 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
Fanshawe's Layla MacKenzie was named OCAA Championship MVP after scoring 43 points over two games.
Anderson (Fanshawe) and Destiny (Humber) were named Championship All-Stars along with Karyn TeBrake (Fanshawe), Sarah Baptie (Humber) and Kendra Oliver (Mohawk).
It was Fanshawe's first OCAA championship since the 2019-20 season. Humber has now won silver in consecutive years, while Mohawk recorded a podium finish for the second straight season.
