TORONTO - Unbeaten Humber and St. Lawrence-Kingston are one
victory away from a showdown in the gold medal game in Ontario
Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women's rugby.
They first have to win semi-final matches at home against
unfamiliar opponents. Humber hosts Algonquin in one semi-final,
while St. Lawrence entertains Conestoga.
Both semi-finals take place this weekend, with the winners
advancing to the gold medal match at the home of the highest seed.
Losing teams will battle for a OCAA bronze medal at the home of the
higher seed. Both matches will take place the weekend of Nov.
12-13.
Algonquin (4-2-0, 2nd East) at Humber (6-0-0, 1st
West)
Saturday, Nov. 5 - 12 p.m.
Humber has been on a roll since winning the 2010 OCAA women's
rugby championship. The Hawks defeated their West region opponents
in six regular season matches in 2011, but will see some new faces
when they host Algonquin for the first time.
Algonquin is in its first year of OCAA women's rugby, and have
impressed in the East with a 4-2-0 record. Its only losses came
against first-place St. Lawrence.
The two top scorers in OCAA will be on display in this match.
Scoring champion Courtney Mastine of Algonquin led
all players with 42 points on four tries, two converts and six
penalty kicks. Humber's Brooklyn Craig scored 39
points on five tries and seven converts.
Conestoga (3-3-0, 2nd West) at St. Lawrence-Kingston
(5-0-1, 1st East)
Sunday, Nov. 6 - 1:30 p.m.
Conestoga has been equally impressive in its first women's rugby
season, securing a berth in the semi-finals. Caitlin
Martin has scored six tries in four matches to lead all
Condors.
Conestoga gave undefeated Humber its toughest match of the regular
season, losing 24-10 on Oct. 22. It was the most points Humber gave
up in a match all season, and the least amount it scored.
St. Lawrence's only blemish was a 15-15 tie against
Fleming-Lindsay on Oct. 1. The Vikings have since reeled off four
straight wins, including two against second-place Algonquin. In a
statistical anomaly, four Vikings tied for the team lead in scoring
with 25 points, including Dana Darlington,
Juletta Cull, Mariah Patrick and
Corisa Cluett.
