ST. LAWRENCE (K) 15, LOYALIST 0
Both the men's and women's rugby teams played at home on Saturday, Sept. 22, with the women's team playing the Lancers from Loyalist College, and the men played Trent University. The women's team played Loyalist in the preseason, and won 33-7. They repeated their success winning 15-0 on home field.
The weather did not cooperate as the wet conditions hampered passing and made the footing for rucks and mauls extremely difficult. The first scoring of the game did not come until the last few minutes when SLC capitalized on a 22 drop-out from Loyalist. Steph Doornekamp picked up a loose ball from the ensuing ruck and drove in for the try, breaking four tackles. She also converted the try to put SLC up 7-0 at the half. In the second half, Sam Laforty executed a beautiful pick and go, and drove in from 15 meters out for SLC's second try. Half way through the second half, the Vikings would capitalize on a penalty, leading to the final score of 15-0. The women's team is now 1-1 for the season, and will play Fleming College on Saturday, Sept. 29. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
Vikings men's team played against a well experienced and strong team from Trent University on Saturday, losing 29-7. With several players returning, Trent dictated the play for most of the game. St. Lawrence captain Eric Jadowski played very well for the Vikings, has his leadership in guiding some of the younger and inexperienced players helped prevent Trent from running away with the score. Rookie back, Ben Van Stansky, played very well in his first rugby game showing great intensity. The men's team also play Fleming College on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 3:00 p.m.
