SENECA 15, SHERIDAN 10
OAKVILLE, Ont. - In their first ever game contested on home soil, the Sheridan Bruins women's rugby team (0-3 OCAA) delivered a tenacious performance - twice answering Seneca tries with ones of their own - but ultimately ended up on the wrong end of 15-10 scoreboard, after a late Seneca try gave the Double-Blue little time to respond.
"Today I think we really came together as a team," assistant coach Amanda Corsetti said. "We worked harder, we fixed what we needed to work on at practices this week and it was a massive difference from our performance on Tuesday."
Much of the first half was a stalemate with both sides moving deep into opposition territory only to be repelled by the defence.
Nearing halftime the Lady Bruins won a scrum in Seneca territory, but turned the ball over which sprung the visitors on a long run and their unconverted try put sheridan in a 5-0 hole after 40 minutes.
After re-grouping at the half, the Double-Blue had a quick answer. They maintained possession after a ruck just over the mid-field line and the ball was swung out to Courtney Ross on the right, who broke away from a pair of defenders and then held a third one off as she plunged in after 50-yard scamper.
With the conversion missed, it pulled the home side level at 5-5.
Seneca had a relatively quick answer for their second try to re-claim a 10-5 advantage.
Yet again the Lady Bruins battled back though, with Ross making another impressive run before dishing off to Ashley Hill who dragged a pair of defenders over the goal line to even the score at 10-10.
A short while later Seneca won a scrum near midfield and were able to break free again to score what proved to be the game-winning try.
The Lady Bruins now have three days to prepare for their second home game against Mohawk on October 3 and Corsetti says the coaching staff has a good idea of what they need to work on to prepare.
"We need to work on the ability to read the game and hit those gaps," she said. "Our rucking has gotten a lot better, but we can't still do that a little bit better and also some fitness."
