HUMBER 45, SHERIDAN 3
OAKVILLE, Ont. - Despite a brisk northernly wind and steady rainfall, the Sheridan Bruins women's rugby team (2-4 OCAA) opened the final game of their inaugural season in strong fashion, scoring the first points of the year against Humber, but were unable to maintain that intensity for 80-minutes and fell 45-3.
"I thought we played very well; we got off to a good start," co-head coach Matt Piemontese said. "Our main weakness again was maintaining our tackles. We let them break through and that's essentially how they scored a lot of their tries. That said, we're happy with the effort [especially] given the weather conditions. The girls have come a long way, we've been competitive all year and we'll go from there."
The Double-Blue found the scoreboard first when Shannon Paterson connected on a penalty kick, putting the homeside up 3-0.
Humber led 28-3 at the half, before tacking on 17 more points over the final 40 minutes.
With the regular season now complete the Lady Bruins still have a chance to qualify for the playoffs, depending on the result of the Mohawk/Conestoga game.
Piemontese says that while their eventual fate is out of their hands, they will go through normal preparations as though they will be one of the six post-season qualifiers.
"We told the girls that they should have their mindset that we will be in the playoffs," he said. "We're planning on practicing this week, unless we hear otherwise. If we do end up making the playoffs, we hope we can give St. Lawrence a good game. I think we're a team that can compete with just about every team in the league, with the possible exceptions of Humber and Algonquin at this point."
