ST. LAWRENCE (K) 27, CONESTOGA 20
Having lost to the Conestoga College Condors in last year's Ontario College Athletics Association (OCAA) East Division playoff game, the Vikings were looking to return the favor in the 2012-13 crossover playoff game on Saturday, Nov. 3.
St. Lawrence College played host again in this year's match, and were busy all week preparing for the rematch. Vikings entered the game with starting players returning to the roster after injury, while Conestoga could only dress 16 players due to injury.
It did not take long for the Vikings to strike, as second year player Juletta Cull scored a try and kicked the convert within the first five minutes of the game to put the Vikings up 7-0. Conestoga would respond to pull within two points, but team captain Stephanie Doornekamp ran a beautiful play off a line-out, fooling Conestoga. The teams would battle back and forth on the field, until Juletta scored again for the Vikings, making it 17-5 at the half.
Shortly before half, Stephanie would be removed from the game due to injury. Looking to bring the game within reach, Conestoga scored a try early and looked to be applying serious pressure to the Vikings defence, looking to capitalize on the two lost starters for St. Lawrence. The teams would exchange tries with Mariah Patrick scoring for St. Lawrence, and with 10 minutes remaining the Vikings found themselves only up two points, until Haley Wilson scored a try making the final score 27-20.
"We played really hard today, and battled through a tough and physical second half where Conestoga really pressured us," said head coach Gary Peacock. "We lost two of our starting players, but the girls battled through the entire game."
The Vikings will now travel to play the Humber College Hawks on Saturday, Nov. 10.
