OCAA IN THE KNOW: WOMEN'S RUGBY

UNBROKEN

The Fleming Knights continue to ride high in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women's rugby east standings.

Fleming (4-0-0) is a victory away from matching its best-ever win total in a regular season, set last year. The Knights can tie the mark Saturday at Loyalist (0-3-1). There is also an outside chance that Fleming can clinch first place, and a bye into the OCAA semi-finals.

These teams met earlier in the season, with Fleming prevailing 44-5. First-year back Angela Godfrey (Baltimore) scored two tries in the victory. Second-year teammate Kayla Cassibo (Belleville) leads the OCAA in points with three tries, 11 converts and three penalty kicks totaling 46 points.

Loyalist remains in the hunt for a playoff berth, tied with Algonquin (0-3-1) for the third and final playoff position out of the east region. Second-year player Brittney Whiting (Trenton) has scored three tries to lead Loyalist scorers.

LAST CALL

While the OCAA women's rugby regular season officially concludes next week, the Sheridan Bruins will wrap theirs up a little early.

Sheridan (3-2-0) hosts Humber (3-1-0) in a match that will pretty much decide second place in the west standings. Humber still has an outside shot at first place, with the losing team starting the post-season on the road against an east region opponent.

Sheridan is led by fourth-year player Khadeshia Thompson (Brampton) and her five tries in three matches. Second-year fly-half Linda Huynh (Kitchener) leads Humber in scoring with five tries and five converts totaling 35 points.

ENCORE PRESENTATION

Seneca (1-3-0) is coming off its first victory of the season, defeating Mohawk 24-5. Second-year back Sarah Givens (Kingston) scored two tries in the win. She now leads her teammates with three tries in four matches.

These teams do battle once again, with Mohawk (0-4-0) looking to flip the script. If successful, it would be a significant achievement. The Mountaineers are winless in four-plus seasons, still searching for the program's first OCAA victory.

EASTBOUND BUT NOT DOWN

St. Lawrence-Kingston (3-1-0) is coming off its first loss of the season, but all is not lost for the Vikings.

In fact, St. Lawrence can finish no worst than second place, meaning a home playoff date against the west region's third seed.

The Vikings still have two regular season matches to play, and still have an opportunity to finish atop the east standings. St. Lawrence visits Algonquin (0-3-1) on Sunday before a return engagement against first-place Fleming.

Second-year wing Michelle Harper (Cobourg) leads the Vikings with three tries and four converts totaling 23 points.

Despite no wins on the season, Algonquin is one point behind Loyalist for the final playoff berth in the east. These teams are set to meet in the regular season finale, which will likely determine which club continues on.
