CORNWALL, P.E.I. - The No. 2-seeded NAIT Ooks of ACAC scored
early in each half, then had to hold off a hard-charging Humber
squad to finish with a 2-1 victory to advance to the bronze medal
game at the CCAA Women's Soccer Championship in Cornwall,
P.E.I.
NAIT got on the board early in the first half.
A NAIT free kick was headed in the direction of second-year
striker Lindsay Vicente, and the Edmonton native made no mistake to
give the Ooks a 1-0 after just three minutes.
Both teams had opportunities throughout the first half, but the
score remained 1-0 after 45 minutes.
NAIT thought they had a goal late in the half, but it was called
back.
NAIT made good shortly thereafter as third-year defender Ashley
Woodford extended the lead in the 51st minute after converting a
free kick from outside the 18-yard box to make it 2-0.
Keyla Moreno brought the Hawks back to within one
in the 76th minute after a perfectly-placed shot that beat
goalkeeper Charlotte Lendzion and got Humber back in the game.
The Hawks pressured NAIT, and they thought they had the equaliser
in extra time, only for the play to be called offside.
Humber will play in the fifth-sixth place match on Saturday at 10 a.m. ET to conclude its schedule at the championship.
